Chapter Fifteen

The yelp that escaped Logan was so high pitched it hurt my ears.

We resurfaced together, and I could almost feel his disbelief as he glared at me.

“What’s the matter?” I asked, injecting as much innocence into my tone as possible. His brows arched, and I splashed more water at him. A growl rumbled from him.

“Now you’re going to get it,” he threatened.

“Catch me if you can,” I taunted as I jumped back onto the shore. I was sprinting for the trees before he even touched the bank.

His cursing sounded in my head as he scrambled after me. It didn’t take him long to catch up, so I zigzagged in and out of trees. Dodging a tall pine at the last second, I tried not to laugh when I heard him run into it headfirst.

“You’ll pay for that one.”

“All these threats, and I’m yet to see any follow through.”

I just had to go and open my big mouth.

The full brunt of Logan’s weight crashed into me only moments later. We fell in a tangle of limbs, and I snapped at his tail as it got a little too close to my face. His warning growl was low as he pinned me down, but the light in his eyes was unmistakable.

“Alright, get off,” I huffed.

“Better?” he asked, plopping down on top of me instead.

“No,” I groaned, kicking at him, to no avail. “You’re killing me.”

He laughed before hopping up and moving away from me. I shook out my coat after getting to my feet. Glaring at him, I watched as he made the mistake of turning his back on me.

Grinning to myself, I snuck after him. Keeping myself low to the ground, I dodged any stick, rock, or leaf that might give me away.

I missed one, and the twig cracked under my paw.

When Logan glanced over his shoulder, I was already in the air.

He went sprawling across the ground when I slammed into his back, rolling us right through a patch of sticker bushes.

“Shit,” he muttered, as we skidded to a stop. He stood and tried to shake some of them loose. “You’re a menace today.”

“Wonder who’s fault that is?”

His eyes rolled before he turned and headed back toward the stream. Repressing the urge to mess with him anymore, I trotted after him. The walk back was quiet, both of us attempting to rid ourselves of the burrs that had gotten embedded in our fur. At this rate, our only hope was shifting.

“Wait here,” he told me when we made it back to the water. With a sigh, I made my way toward a boulder that had somehow escaped my attention the first time. The stream flowed peacefully beneath the massive rock, which jutted out like a cliff. Natural steps carved into the earth led up to a level surface, beckoning me forward. Just as I was about to head up, Logan appeared again, his mouth filled with two baskets. He tossed one at my feet. “Here.”

Using my nose, I shoved the lid off to reveal the packed clothes.
